Tuesday, July 1st is Canada Day. That's our "4th of July" for my American readers. Well, it really has nothing to do with July 4th or America ... it's the day we celebrate Canada's birthday ... this year the country is 141 years old.
The 1st of July falls on a Tuesday this year, which means many Canadians will have to work on Monday ... and then have a holiday on Tuesday. It has many feeling like they've been gypped out of a long weekend.
I don't usually work on Mondays, so I'm actually getting a really long weekend. Don't hate me.
In honour of Canada Day our national news magazine, MacLean's, published findings from a survey highlighting some differences between Canadians and Americans, for example:
We'd rather live in sin (who still calls it that?)
We're healthier and pay half as much for health care.
We have more adventurous sex (obviously I did not partake in this survey).
And, we like to travel the globe more.
Want to put your Canadian knowledge to the test? They also have a quiz you can take...Here's the link. I was a bit afraid to take it ... with good reason, I only got 9 out of 20 correct! I'll probably get deported soon.
Who knew we had 6 times zones? (There, I just gave you one answer.)

30 Astute Observations:
Hey Drowsey - I beat you on this weekend I don't have to work until Thursday!! WhooHoo!!! Oh yeah, I forgot that then I have to work with the bitch from hell! I need the four days just to heal my wounds.
Well dang - I got 8 right but one doesn't count cause I got the answer from you (time zones). I am jealous that you have a four day weekend.
I LOVE CANADA ! I AM MOVING UP THERE!
Trivia about me: my last name is almost unheard of down here but apparently is popular up there (my dad was from Novia Scotia). Unfortunately its the last name of your most notorious serial killer!

I love you ...you know I do, but I do "object" to the notion you guys are healthier. I have had a lot of experience with Canadian women extremely angry with your healthcare system and not able to even get in to see a doctor. Also mom is sick with leukemia and the treatment she was on for 10 years was not approved in Canada and she either would have died or had to come to the US for it. It saved her life! I also have a current client, see my other blog, who is coming to the US to deliver. I was as shocked about that as you probably are reading it. There are some good things about your system and some bad just like here. No system is perfect.
Well, I took your Canadian quiz. I totally guessed all of answers, hitting the buttons randomly and guess what? 9 out of 20!
Drowsey, I don't believe you're Canadian. You must be from the UK ;O)
Just by guessing I got 8/20 40%
I think I need a day off as well to learn a bit more about Canada! lol
have a great weekend!
happy canada day! i have very little canadian knowledge, so i won't embarass myself by taking the test.
;)
~m
I got 9 out of 20. Only a few were lucky guesses. Maybe I have some psychic Canadian connection because I was born in New Brunswick.
That's a city in New Jersey, not the Canuckian one.
OK, if there are six time zones, can you tell me which one Alberta is in so I can finally work out whether it took me 8 or 9 hours to fly from England (I lost track. Cming back was worse).
Actaully, I'd need to know how far ahead of English time that time zone is in, too.
lauren - oh yeah, there's no perfect system, but I've never encountered a problem, same with my parents, who were big users...especially when they got older and had various illnesses. I do prefer our system overall tho.
babs - lol, well, you're approved to move here then. Some of those questions were just stooopid!
lb - yes, take the holiday ;) Some of those questions were new to me ... and I live here!
greg - thanks, you too
m - well, based on my score I don't think it would be too embarrassing, lol
old man - I used to live in NB ... so you're kind of canadian then? ;)
val - you're asking the wrong person, lol! I don't think Alberta does the daylight savings time thing...so I have no idea what time it is there. I thought we only had 3 times zones!
Just did the quiz on guesses and got 20%!
I did know the Charles de Gaulle question, but hat's all.
val - you got all of them right? Damn, I'm impressed!!! You're citizenship papers are in the mail! ;)
I got 7 out of 20 questions correct. lol
Happy Canada Day!
Canada Rocks!
I like your country better. I've had just about enough of mine. I think everyone around here is pretty much missing the point. So, can I come over there? Should I bring anything? Like Napa Valley wine, avocados, or what's left of our common sense? I can just pick some up on the way there.
LOL I got 8 answers correct 1 owing it to you for your giveaway.
I am not Canadian though but I am reading lots about your country as I might be moving there sometime soon a visit this year most probably if the embassy won't be too picky hahahaha!
Your parents are from Nova Scotia? Which part? I know some people in Yarmouth.
Nice to meet you and Happy Canada day!
You crazy Canadians! I just love ya!
rose ... geeze, you're gonna get deported too!
dawn ... yes it does! Enjoy the weekend!
nanny - come on up! :)
earthling - cool ... pretty soon we'll have everyone living here! lol My parents are from the Glace Bay area, on Cape Breton.
chick - we are a bit crazy ... it's all the tim horton's coffee :P
oh ya, i too have to work monday and have tuesday off, ah well , it is still a day off.I think i also would fail this test, who knew?...lol
Er, Drowsey - 20% is not ALL of them right, hon, just 1 in 5!
Obviously your maths is of similar standard to your knowledge of Canada. LOL.
darlene - well, it will be like a week with 2 fridays ... 'cause who's gonna do much work on Monday? LOL
val - Ooohhhh...ahahaha! I thought you said you got 20 right! LOL Yeah, my math does suck ... but my reading glasses need to be stronger, LOL. No citizen papers for you then.
Ha! I got 10, but only because you gave me one answer too...
I have Monday as a vacation day, so I've been enjoying a four day weekend! Woot!
Our flags are up in our front windows and inside the house and car. We are ready!
Happy Canada Day!!!
well, 10 is impressive :) Yes, I'm feeling quite happy here on a Sunday night knowing I have 2 more days to waste! lol
They lied. Boston Cream does NOT have the less calories.
rose - yeah, I wondered about that too!
I did even worse than you did on the quiz. I should have known that Toronto was the most multicultural city in Canada, I only live an hour away from it and work 20 minutes away from Toronto.
I didn't realize you were canadian, cool :) Well, I live near Toronto too ... but I thought it was a trick question ... lol.
