I was hanging out on BlogCatalog yesterday when calais50 started a discussion thread asking if anyone had ever been on TV or in the newspaper. I responded highlighting my brush with TV fame, and then realized there was an actual post in there somewhere. So here it is.
About 10 years ago I worked for a non-profit organization and we were holding a fund-raising event in the community. As part of my job, I had to go along with a couple of volunteers and do a quick interview for the local TV station. No biggie ... I could do that.
The volunteers were quite nervous, so of course I reassured them that it would be okay ... not to worry. After all, these were professionals who knew what they were doing, plus it was just a local cable program that highlighted community happenings ... who watched that stuff? Hardly anyone, it's not even like real TV.
So the day arrives and I was feeling a bit nervous. The fact is, I'm more of a behind-the-scenes kind of person ... and like it there. But since I was staff I felt I had to be in control and put on a professional appearance to support the volunteers, who were starting to have second thoughts about the whole thing.
The interviewer told us what he was going to ask us, and helped us to feel calm and comfortable. As the crew set up the cameras we practiced what we would say. It was all good, we were relaxed and laughing. I didn't have a care in the world at that point. Then the camera went on.
I was a deer in the headlights.
I don't really remember what I said or what happened, it was all kind of a blur. But even though I was a tad nervous, I felt I was doing well.
Then the camera went off and it was as if life started again. There was a lot of buzz and everyone was animated and talking and laughing. The TV people left and we were all standing around. Some volunteers came out to watch us and give support, so of course we asked them how we all did on camera.
People were shouting out kudos ... then someone quietly said to me that the next time I do something like that, "I should remember to smile" ... that's when another helpful person yelled out, "and blink" then there was a round of, "yes, blink ... and smile"
It was like I was getting peppered with helpful hints. Then someone felt the need to sum in all up in a complete sentence, "You didn't look very friendly, because you weren't smiling or blinking." It was at that time I felt the need to wrap it up, as they say, "Thanks for the input everyone! And for coming out to support us!" I said, smiling and blinking.
A few days later the interview aired on the local cable station. With some trepidation I tuned it. My first thought? "Who the hell is that terrified, angry, non-blinking woman on TV?"
Seriously, it was like I was watching some other lady ... with my voice. Cracked me up!
By the way ... not blinking and/or smiling when talking ... a tad psychopathic looking. A scary monotone voice doesn't help either. I add that for future reference, you know, in case you're ever interviewed on camera.
Thankfully the interview only ran on the local cable network that most people (I thought) didn't watch. It's actually amazing how many people tune in to those shows. The fact that it ran 4 times a day for a week also came as a surprise to me. I add that for future reference as well. You're welcome.

41 Astute Observations:
Like a deer in the headlights? Right. And, a 4-times per week replay? Nothing like pouring on, and perpetuating, the Zombie-look, for the benefit of all friends and relatives.
Best to flip off the whole thing. Tell all who comment to you about it that your powers can only be used for good, and with a curt wave of the hand, dismiss the whole incident.
At least you didn't forget to breath! ;-)
I SAW you! You were...what did the call you...OH Right; the runaway bride! I found you interesting, in a Stepford Wives kinda way. KUDOS
jack - thankfully it was 10 years ago, but at the time! OMG ... everyone I saw ... "I didn't think that was you, you look so .... different .... on TV" LOL LOL....still cracks me up.
stinkypaw - yes, I think I did breath, hmmm ... I think? LOL I didn't pass out so I must have! ;)
diane - stop it! lol ... but yes, I think I did look a tad robotic. Yes, robotic is much nicer than psychopathic ;)
rofl DM :-)
what is it about us that when that camera is pointed at you all sense disappears.
'don't really remember what I said or what happened, it was all kind of a blur' I know soooo where you are coming from here I had this when I was in the audience on BBC Panorama & they shoved a mic in my face.. thank goodness they cut my drivel lol
Oh I know! LOL ... kind of gives me more respect for news casters and actors. Well, you know ... kind of ;)
TOO FUNNY! I wonder if we can get our hands on that film clip and youtube it!
I was on CNN and MSNBC. There were thousands of us waiting for the USS Lincoln to return, the Navy Ship that Bush gave his speech on sayint "Mission Accomplished". Anyhow I got a camera shoved in my face and they asked "Who are you here waiting for" I didn't think the real answer would sound too good for me or the Navy so I just said "a Friend, Captian Blane F.". I saw it on the news that night I looked ... guilty LOL If you want the juicy story email me.
Now when we look at people on TV and see them squirm or look foolish, I guess we can identify rather than assume. I too have appeared as someone other than myself in the harsh limelight. Glad to hear I'm not alone!
I was interviewed for the local BBC news programme once. I was amazingly calm and relaxed. However It's not often (if ever) you see yourself, full faced and talking on your wide screen TV! It's the most embarrassing thing ever. I absolutely hate it when Mo decides to show it to friends :O(
Who is that ugly woman?!!!!
Personally I foudn your widgit chick more intimidating as it followed my cursor to the left as I went to click on comments. Scary! Your experience sounds like that Everybody Loves Raymond episode where he goes on TV to talk about sports and his family gives him feedback and makes him feel terrible. The next time he goes back on that show he is exactly as you describe and does horribly. So sad. :-(
Poor Drowsey-- Her 15 minutes of fame and all that time a lack of eyelid movement... Ah, if we could only go back and revise certain parts of our lives, eh?
Great post! I had a similar experience when my picture ran in the newspaper. I didn't see the picture until a few weeks later, but there must have been 20 people at work who told me my picture looked really good. When I saw it, I realized they were just being nice. It was the worst picture I've ever taken. They caught me mid sentence and my face was all contorted. Thank goodness it was just print and not airing on tv 4 times a day, ha ha. Thanks for the mention:)

Congratulations! That's cool. Everyone gets stage fright in front of the camera, even the pros when they first start out. The trick is, pretend the camera is naked. That'll get you over it, and let your true smiling self blossom. It works for me, anyway. ;-)
I always remember to blink when I'm on TV.
On a side note, watch "Cops" this weekend...I'm the guy in the tanktop.
you’re my kind of woman…
lets see now,,
you have a head the size of blimp,,
you walk funny,,
your thumbs hang backwards,,
you don’t blink,,
your angry,,
you don’t smile,,
your always stifling and sneezing,,
your addicted to Nyquil,,
you like to go out dressed in a bathrobe,,
you only drink Baileys…
you drive a car that was condemned by the Canadian traffic police 4 years ago,,
you can’t spell donut,,
and to top it all off,, you like to
throw nosey neighbors off your balcony……
Hubba hubba..... ;-)
you are so funny, hon. i think many of us have been there. not necessarily in front of a camera, but in front of an audience where we froze. at least you were breathing! well done!
;)

That video would be freakin' awesome.
You need to track it down for us.
That's the exact opposite of why I suck on film.
I don't even notice cameras.
LOL @ gt28! Sounds like he's got your number Drowsey! :)
Oh my blog-mistress was recently interviewed by a local TV reporter due to a sales scam that was making the rounds...when it aired, there she was with her
1st & last name along with words "SCAM VICTIM" plastered across the screen. How embarassing!!!
Back in the early to mid-80s, I was on TV several times as a representative of our local Jaycees chapter on the local Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. The first time was exactly like you describe...staring straight ahead, not blinking, not smiling, afraid to move. Then next two times, it was a different experience...worse. Because I had seen replays of the first time, I over compensated and looked like a total yokel. Pretty much, I've stayed away from TV cameras since then.
I've been on TV a couple of times in my role as "spokesmonkey" for my company. Amazingly, you humans have perfect recall. . . sometimes months later . . . of those you've seen on tv. scary.
LOL! I would be unable to blink or smile, either, but Other Half was interviewed on a morning TV show one time and he looked like a pro! Completely at ease! I couldn't believe it!
barbara - lol ... the camera doesn't lie ;) Okay, I'm off to email ya now, I love juicy stories.
joh - it's weird eh? I'm sure I'll still mock people tho, lol
babs - LOL ... I know what you mean, altho I'm sure you weren't ugly :) It's frightening sometimes to think that others have to see me all the time, thank god I only saw it once! LOL
lauren - the widget chick's eyes don't move, what ever are you talking about (muahahaha) I didn't see that episode ... but I can imagine.
jenn - I know! Well, to be honest there's a lot more embarrassing moments I'd like to erase, that one was pretty mild, lol
robin - well, thanks for giving me the idea! :) Yeah, a still picture can sometimes be worse ... seeing yourself stuck in mid sentence, lol.
marvin - I have no need to get over my stage fright, therefore I'm never doing it again, :)
moog - LOL! A guy with a shirt on in that show, that will be new!
gt - you want me, I can tell.
maria - yes, I've decided I was breathing! LOL
oldman - omg, NEVER! I wonder how long they keep those things.
rg - wouldn't that be better? Or, well ... maybe not.
olga - yeah, it's like gt found my eharmony profile, LOL. omg, lol@ scam victim ... that is embarassing!
lee - LOL ... oh I've seen those yokel's on TV ... so I know what you mean! I wondered if they were like that in real life ... over compensating can be a killer for sure, ;)
bongo - it is scary, good thing you're a monkey :)
jay - well, I'm impressed. My sis has been interviewed a few times, she's like a pro too ... but she loves the attention anyway, LOL. It is impressive.
Are we playing whos on first tonight?.....
I think so.
ok,, you find me and I'll answer a question...
I've asked you lots of questions, and I'm usually sent to some story of your to read ... and interpret ... I'm afraid to ask anymore ... of course I still do, LOL!
And I answered every one...
Don't like my stories,, huh?...
Oh,, your no fun…Here I was already to play a game of
Blogland hide & seek and you go off and play with monkey…just remember one thing…
If you ever go looking for your heart's desire,, don't look any further than your own back yard…Because if it isn't there,, you never really lost it to begin with!...
Tallyhoe,, in a cloud of dust I go......
I don't have a back yard.
PLEASE tell me that there is video of that somewhere in this world! As fabulous as that was in my head... I know it's more fabulous in real life. :-)
Lol, it's funny cause it's true. I have had my fair share on stage in front of hundreds of people playing guitar, brag brag, no biggy, it was our church, they have to take everyone who applies, even me. I was faulted for, you guessed it, not being animated enough, thanks for the tip, next time I go on I'll blink like crazy, and throw in a casual smile, all the while trying to play my guitar, my only saving grace is I don't have to sing, that would be scary, playing guitar, not blinking or smiling.
That's too funny! I would probably be the same way!
Very funny post! I think if we were all honest about it, we would all do the "robot act" if we were placed in front of the camera. I think it was great that you were still able to speak.
Sounds like quite the experience. lol I have been on the radio and in the news paper, but never TV. Thankfully!
corrina - it's looong gone :) heehee
bob - wow I had no idea you were in a bad ... woohoo. I don't really remember Jagger blinking & smiling a lot tho.
chris - it's weird how I just flipped like a switch into a total idiot, well, more of an idiot ;)
kelly - yes I'm sure I said great stuff too, lol. Well, it was all very monotone with no spaces.
rose - it is odd how that camera changes people! It's silly really!
Ahahahahaha!!! I can so relate! But the not-blinking/smiling.... hilarious!
LOL!!! Sort of like Cindy Brady when she went on that TV spelling show on "The Brady Bunch". hahaha
Having worked behind the scenes as a Production Tech, I encountered a lot of people w/ were terrified of being on TV, so you are not alone.
maureen - consider it my tip to you :) LOL
jojo - omg, you're right...I remember that episode, lol.
This is freaking hysterical. I can only imagine your sheer horror!
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I'm sure I would have acted a fool as well!
lol ... maybe I should give it a try again. Nawww.... LOL
